Church History

At the beginning of December 1953, several people had the vision to start a Free Will Baptist Church in Lawton, Oklahoma. 15 charter members held services in a small building in southwest Lawton, later renting the American Legion building for $5.00 per week. The first pastor was De Arthur Yandell. The church was organized in 1954 in the home of Watie & Rhoda Buttram at 2501 SW A Avenue. The church joined the Hopewell No. 2 Association in January 1955. In March 1956, the church purchased the lot at 24th & Cornell for $2,500. By spring 1957, the church was able to purchase a used barracks building from Craterville Park & services have been held at this location ever since. By fall 1957, they were able to add a 10 X 70 addition to hold 4 classrooms & another restroom.

There were several pastors from 1955 – 1965 when Myrl Kellett became pastor. He & his wife, Wanda, had a vision for the church building program to be continued. They added a sanctuary designed by architect, Richard Tipton & constructed under the contractor, Elmer Holsey.

The new sanctuary was dedicated on March 1, 1970. Shortly after this, Myrl Kellett resigned, but returned in May 1979 & pastored until he retired in January 2013. His son, Mark Kellett became associate pastor in July 2007 & took over the pastorate when his father retired.

During Myrl Kellett’s tenure, the church continued the building fund started in 1955, with a vision to purchase the land west of the church. After much prayer, walking the property & patiently waiting on God to move on the heart of the landowner, the church was able to purchase the 8 lots for a fraction of the original price, purchasing it for $13,000 in January 2003. By 2004, plans were already drawn up, dedicated to God & the church continued to save money to build without going into debt. The church voted on April 24, 2011, to start the building & apply for the permits for an educational building & fellowship hall to be located at 9 SW 24th. The building was completed in the spring of 2013 for an approximate cost of $300,000 without any debt.

Mark Kellett continued as pastor until May 2016. He was followed by one interim pastor until David Voegtlin became our pastor in July 2019 through September 8, 2021.
